Where do you work?

Institute for Social Research, Survey Research Center

When did you serve in the Peace Corps?

1993-95

Where did you serve (which country/countries)?

Fiji Islands

What were your main responsibilities as a volunteer?

Management Planning Advisor

Is there a specific person (or persons) who made a strong impression on you during that time?

There are too many to mention!

What was one of the most memorable moments you had as a volunteer?

I was helping with a training session on a very remote part of the island only accessible by boat (on the Ocean!). The outboard motor sputtered a bit along the way and we made it. The location itself was idyllic and all else went well.

In what ways did your Peace Corps experience affect your life and/or career decisions?

I think it gave me a broader view of how people in different cultures see the US--for what it is and what it is not.

What advice would you give to others who are contemplating going into the Peace Corps?

I would encourage anyone with even the slightest interest to come along to a recruiting meeting and talk to others who have been been there and done that. No two people will have the same experience but the guarantee is that it will change you.

What is the value gained from the Peace Corps experience?

The memories are as clear as yesterday and you make friends for life--sometimes only those folks who went through the experience can understand.

What lessons did you learn in the Peace Corps that you carry with you today?

You can make it in this world with a lot less than we are accustomed to in the US--and perhaps even be richer for it.
