Nepal

What were your main responsibilities as a volunteer?

Collateral verification for loan program through local bank to generate cash economy.

Is there a specific person (or persons) who made a strong impression on you during that time?

Durga Adhikari - my Nepali counterpart in the bank. I married him!

What was one of the most memorable moments you had as a volunteer?

Probably the day I have a 10 foot snake in my bed...

In what ways did your Peace Corps experience affect your life and/or career decisions?

I married a Nepali man and we wanted to live in a rural village and devote our lives to developing it, but we could not stay because of politics.

In what ways did your U-M education, both inside and outside the classroom, prepare you for your Peace Corps experience?

Degree in economics helped while working in the bank in Nepal.

What advice would you give to others who are contemplating going into the Peace Corps?

Clear as many ties from here as possible, plan on spending time traveling around the world on your way home and don't drink the water!

What is the value gained from the Peace Corps experience?

When you give of yourself, you always get so much in return.

What lessons did you learn in the Peace Corps that you carry with you today?

You do people a greater service when you help them do for themselves rather than just giving them a handout.
