Small Business Development Volunteer

Is there a specific person (or persons) who made a strong impression on you during that time?

So many people including, fellow volunteers, dominican people as a group, and all all involved in the administrative network of the Peace Corps-Dominican Republic, made such strong impressions that hardly a day goes by that I don't think about someone with whom I interacted during my experience.

What was one of the most memorable moments you had as a volunteer?

My most memorable moments is also one of my saddest. It was the final day of my volunteer term. The community sponsored a big celebration of gratitude of my service and sadness that it was coming to an end. To them I was Dominican and they were losing a son.

In what ways did your Peace Corps experience affect your life and/or career decisions?

I joined the Peace Corps maybe for selfish reasons. I wanted to help people, but it was also to repay a debt. People in my community helped me when most needed. I needed to repay that debt. Now, as I prepare for a medical mission to Haiti, I do it to simple to make a difference in someone's life. To motivate them to do the same.

What advice would you give to others who are contemplating going into the Peace Corps?

My advice to those contemplating joining the Peace Corps is to stop contemplating and go! Once you are there, stay focused on your mission and soak in the culture, language and experience. It will be trying at times but the rewards in the end will be more than you can ever anticipate.

What is the value gained from the Peace Corps experience?

The value gained from the Peace Coprs experience is still being appreciated and determined.

What lessons did you learn in the Peace Corps that you carry with you today?

The lessons learned in the Peace Corps, in the passion you exude in working with others, you will find is returned in an even greater capacity.
